READ THIS:

IT CAME FROM THE SEA IS NO LONGER ON AT THE HANBURY BALLROOM.
SO PLEASE IGNORE ANY ADVERTISING YOU MAY HAVE SEEN FOR SEPTEMBER.

in the meantime we will be taking this opportunity to do some guest spots at our favourite nites and work on our *new* website before 'it came from the sea' returns with a new venue early next year.

IT CAME FROM THE SEA INVADES AUDIO
THURSDAY 02 SEPTEMBER 10-2 FREE / £3

When Audio planned a mini-season of guest spots for local deejay tag-teams on the up-and-up, the last thing they expected was that one of the chosen groups – nikon driver and kicking_k of the Hanbury Ballroom’s infamous fashionista clusterfuck, It Came from the Sea – would use the opportunity of playing in Brighton’s swankiest new club to launch an all-out, full-frontal invasion. They’re inviting their legions of fans to come down and occupy the dance floor for one night only – and have ostentatiously bucked clubland’s rules & regs by promising free entry before eleven (it’s a negligible £3 for latecomers). Showing a characteristic concern with fun above profit, the duo plan on turning Audio inside-out with their trademark artschool happening makeover – expect dog bowls full of sweets on the tables, arthouse movies projected onto the walls, and bubble and smoke machines working overtime. Meanwhile, their maverick music policy is an inimitable hipster megamix of anything goes experimental disco chaos – music non-stop from hip-hop to fashion pop, electro sleaze and rock action. A selection of £2 drinks offers seal the deal. Dancing is mandatory.

THE PROMO READS SOMETHING LIKE THIS:

Lo-Res presents
POST-EVERYTHING
NIKON DRIVER : KICKING_K : ALEX HATTON : JAMIE LAU : BORBONESA

THE PERMANENT GALLERY
BEDFORD PLACE, BRIGHTON
20 AUGUST – 5 SEPTEMBER. 2004

Early 2003, and in a culty bar above the busiest live venue in Brighton, a ‘monthly celebration of DIY culture’ called Lo-Res came from nowhere to bring together all manner of creative types for a night of free art (‘zine cult mp3 mash-up no-budget DIY art GO!’) and experimental music. It was billed as ‘Brighton’s only avant-garde social club’ and quickly set about living up to its title: video artists exhibited on a TV dragged down the road from someone’s living room, self-published comics and minimags ranging from international political to the most private and personal were distributed direct to tables, drinks sat on ultra-limited designer beermats created by photographers, writers, mixed-media artists, fashion students and moonlighting musicians.

There was a wildly successful Brighton Band Scene Special featuring a 15-track free CD (bundled with a custom-built zine, created by the bands themselves), and a ‘New York New Art Invasion’ that saw material generated across the Atlantic, before being emailed here, where it was printed out, assembled and distributed.

For a whole year, Lo-Res demonstrated that the DIY route to self-expression is entirely viable; that cheapness of material, and quality of reproduction need not be obstacles to good ideas and raw talent.

Now.

POST-EVERYTHING.

Lo-Res founders, Nikon Driver and kicking_k showcase new work along-side collaborators Jamie Lau, Alex Hatton and Borbonesa Publishing.

This is an exhibition about escapism, glamour and disillusionment. When leisure time becomes just another routine. When you’re going through the motions on dance floors and in bedrooms - you know everybody’s name, but you’ve got nothing to say. When you’re feeling a little adrift in your life, when the narrative isn’t advancing as fast as you’d like. It’s about the dead ends of hedonism, the distraction of instant gratification. It’s about doing stuff and feeling nothing. It’s an art exhibition as hang-over.

It’s what happens when the questions kick in.

The 'It came from the sea' mobile disco is on the move again.

This Sunday the Enigma gets the ICFTS aural
makeover at 'The Electric Sessions' from 8-12.

We'll be providing covering fire for 3 of
brightons hopefuls. Their cut 'n' paste blurb
goes something like this:

OOM
3-piece grungy electronic band based in Brighton.
Think Massive Attack, Bjork, Goldfrapp and
Portishead, but with its own striking identity of
elegant darkness.

BONEMACHINE
Sexy, wistful and atmospheric. A difficult sound
to categorise, but it's good enough for this to
be an advantage rather than a hindrance.

ELITE
’Cool Pop’: A female singer / songwriter who also
produces her own material. Influenced by Air,
Beck, Daft Punk, Blondie, Cardigans.

This nite is part of the enigma relaunch month
where it's gonna be hosting dozens of live bands
to show off it's newly installed stage and live
PA system.

more info here

ok. enough already.

FOR THOSE NOT ON THE MAILING LIST:

----------------------------------------------------------------------

bom dia, hola, bonjour, guten tag, saluton, and hello.

it’s the big one. the one we’ve been waiting for. it’s a balmy evening here in
Brighton, and it’s time for two unstoppable forces to meet head on: It Came from
the Sea vs. Public Opinion.

when titans like this go head-to-head, you can forget about the offside rule –
you’ll be lucky if they follow the Geneva Conventions. so be in no doubt.
without so much as a trace element of exaggeration: this is Total War. let’s get
ready to go A.W.O.L.

IT CAME FROM THE SEA #14
PASSION & COMMITMENT

THE HANBURY BALLROOM
FRI 18 JUN 10PM-2AM > £5/4

to celebrate the inclusive, allegedly progressive hi-lo culture festival of
physicality that is EURO2004, nikon driver and kicking_k invite you to
ICFTHS/JUN: fuck-all to do with football since 2003.

in a time of tribal aggression, the newly-returfed Hanbury dancefloor is a
love-in, not a no-man’s land. there’s no room for spectators, everyone is onside
and the atmosphere, i can tell you, is *electric*.

just some of the names to look out for: !!!, OUTKAST, SCISSOR SISTERS, LCD
SOUNDSYSTEM, PINK GREASE, BLOC PARTY, FELIX DA HOUSECAT, THE INFADELS, RADIO 4
(NEW ALBUM), MISSY ELLIOTT, JAY-Z, DFA, BUMBLEBEEZ, SPEKTRUM, MUNK & PRINCESS
SUPERSTAR, TAZ, MISS KITTIN, KELIS, FISCHERSPOONER, MICHAEL DRACULA, CAM’RON,
LES SAVY FAV and JANET JACKSON.

hospitality: fans can expect drinks promos for the first hour, souvenirs on the
tables, and arthouse spectacle somewhere over the dance floor. also: bubbles.

get down early to go home in a fucking ambulance.
